Nærøyfjorden!

Nærøyfjorden is one of the most impressive of all fjords in the ounty of Sogn og Fjordane. The fjord is about 400 meters deep, and is surrounded by huge mountains. The highest mountain is stretching 1700 meter above the fjord. Nærøyfjorden is a marvellous example on a wild, dramatic and nearly untouched norwegian fjordlandscape.

Flåmsbana, which goes from Myrdal to Flåm, is a fantastic experience. The line 20km, while the steepest gradient is 5,5% (1:18). To cope with the enormous change in height over such a short stretch, the line runs partly through tunnels which spiral in and out of the mountainside. There is also a Flåm line museum in Flåm which should be visited during this experience.

Some of the finest stave churces in Norway are situated in this region. Built around vertical poles, these medieval churches are the most distinctive buildings in Norwegian building tradition. Urnes stavkyrkje probably dates back to the beginning of the 12th century, which makes it the oldest stave church in Norway. The stave churches in  Kaupanger and Borgund  were built in the later half of the 12th century, and especially Borgund is a very popular sight, long reckoned to represent the generic building style of the stave churches.
